J&M Farm: A Family Success Story
By Ryan Anderson

Johnny & Maurina GyergyovAs is the theme in many of the articles on our website, sometimes an unexpected job loss can turn into a genuine opportunity. Such was the case with Johnny & Maurina Gyergyov, who moved out to rural Macomb County in the late 1970's with "no intention of farming". However, as they settled in, and with fond memories of visits to Johnny’s grandfather’s farm in Oklahoma, they decided to start J&M Farm as a family operation in 1983. Although they had no real experience in farming, they did have a tremendous enthusiasm about the venture, and slowly built up the farm from 1 acre to almost 10, but it continued to be a part-time job for Johnny. As fate would have it, in 1994 he would lose his job of 29 years, and take over the operations full-time to support his family. They chose to concentrate on raising "happy hogs", and the family has never looked back.

The term "happy hogs" comes from the fact that J&M doesn’t use hormones or anti-biotics in the raising of their animals, which ultimately benefits the consumer, as studies have shown that continued exposure to anti-biotics in our diet and environment lead to more resistant forms of bacteria. Their hogs are fed high quality corn and soybean feed, as well as a steady stream of country music 24 hours a day. The meat is processed at their USDA approved facility, and they offer sides of freezer pork, along with various cuts and sausages. You can find their products right there at their farm market in Allenton, or at locations around Almont (including the Almont Farmer's Market during the summer), Imlay City, and Romeo. By far the most popular part of their business, though, are pigs roasts - where they show up with the equipment and the pig, and either cook it for you or leave you with instructions. When it's finished, they take care of cleaning up. Nothing could be easier.

This family operation continues to grow, and have recently began selling meats bundles on-line. At their website, you can find out more information about this great family-farm success story. Visit their farm market soon, and ask them about their "happy hogs".  >>>
