A Day At the Flint Farmer's Market
Tucked away along the banks of the Flint River, just
off I-475, you'll find fresh food and friendly people at
the Flint Farmer's Market. If you go on a Saturday
(the market is also open Tuesdays and Thursdays),
expect to stick around for a while, and bring a
healthy appetite - as there's freshly prepared
sandwiches and hot food available at many of the
vendors, and at Steady Eddy's Café upstairs. The
market consists of an outside row of open-air stalls,
selling mostly fresh produce and specialty items, as
well as an enclosed shed, where many of the more
permanent vendors sell everything from baked goods,
fresh meats, handmade soaps, coffee and so much
more. The Uptown Reinvestment Corporation
assumed management of the Farmer's Market 3 years
ago, and has since made improvements to the facility
along with more promotion of the Market.

Dear subscriber,
It's summer vacation time in Michigan, and people are
hitting the roads to check out the various art fairs
and street festivals happening around the state.
You'll notice many of our articles are about food, and
that's because summer is the time to get out and
enjoy Michigan's agricultural bounty. It's also a great
way to re-invest in the local economy. Also, we've
made some improvements to the website, including a
re-designed interface. See the article below for
more information.
Our monthly contest prize, the Detroit Spice Co.
sampler, contains 6 different spice mixes - great for
marinades or rubs. See details below.
Congratulations to "scott327" of Lansing, MI. They
won June's contest giveaway - Sleeping Bear Farm's
Sweet Dreams Gift Box.

In case you hadn't noticed, our website has
undergone a slight remodeling. We've cleaned up the
interface, and lightened up the background to
convey a more open feel. On the front page of the
site, we've added a Weekly Featured Company, to
highlight some of our favorite companies.

Artisan Cheeses From Zingerman's Creamery

A member of the Zingerman's "empire" in Ann Arbor,
Zingerman's Creamery was founded by chief
cheesemaker John Loomis in the town of Manchester
in 2001, making an assortment of artisan cheeses
and authentic gelato. Since then, they have moved
operations to be closer to the other Zingerman's
facilities in Ann Arbor, where you can now watch the
making of cheeses - many of them American Cheese
Society award winners - and buy them at their retail
shop.

Michigan Jalapeno & Cheese Corn Muffins

Oh man, nothing hits the spot on a hot summer day
quite like these slightly-spicy baked treats, complete
with a hint of colby-jack cheese. When I make them,
I like to include Michigan-made products, in fact this
recipe is based on a classic Michigan product, Jiffy
Corn Muffin mix. It's also a great way to use up
that bumper crop of jalapeno peppers we have this
year.
